Mr. Schwump...."The Man, The Mystery"

Mr. Schwump, never spoke a word, but has grown to be the most famous man that nobody knows!  You can often see him sitting on the bench outside the barbershop or in the background at parties and dances.   Over the years, cast and crew of The Andy Griffith Show, including Andy Griffith and producer, Richard Linke, have been asked if they know the name of the actor who played Mr. Schwump.   They all remember the character, but none of them can recall his real name.  Some tend to think that he was a friend of Andy Griffith who was offered a role in the show, but when it came time for his character to speak, he froze up and never spoke his lines.  From that point on, his character never had a line to speak.  Mr. Schwump appeared in 26 TAGS episodes.  That's a lot of episodes for him to appear in and no one know his name.  No one has even been able to find out who the actor was that portrayed him and so he remains one of the greatest mysteries of Mayberry.

Incidentally, Mr. Schwump  did not leave his cameo appearances only on TAGS, he appeared in two episodes of Gomer Pyle, USMC, One of Our Shells Are Missing (04/05/67)  and Supply Sergeants Never Die 10/22/65) and appeared in other movies including  the 1945  classic, "Christmas in Connecticut".   You can copy and paste the link below in your web browser to look at his Oscar winning role.
