George "Goober Pyle" Lindsey

George Lindsey

George Lindsey (better known as Goober Pyle) was born December 17, 1928 in Fairfield, Alabama. George grew up in the small town of Jasper. He became interested in acting at the age of 14. At an early age he would anything for laughs. He was voted 'funniest boy' throughout his high school years. He later graduated from the University of North Alabama and began teaching at Hazel Green High School. After of year of teaching, George was anxious to start acting. He left for New York to study with Helen Hayes at the American Theater Wing and eventually moved from Broadway to Hollywood. There he began his acting career with small parts on such shows as The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, The Rifleman, and The Twilight Zone.
         George became a regular cast member on the The Andy Griffith Show in 1965 and played Goober Pyle until 1968. He continued his role as Goober in the spin-off series Mayberry R.F.D. until 1971. Following Mayberry R.F.D., he began a successful 20 year run on Hee Haw from 1972-1992. He also appeared in such films as Take This Job and Shove It and   Cannonball Run II.
        In 1986 George reprized his role of Goober in the made for TV movie reunion Return to Mayberry and the appeared as himself on The Andy Griffith Reunion in 1993.
         In 1992, George Lindsey’s alma mater bestowed on him an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree, in 1995 he published his autobiography, Goober in a Nutshell, and in 1998, George established the annual George Lindsey/University of North Alabama Television and Film Festival.

Goober Pyle cousin to Gomer Pyle, was born and raised in Mayberry, he attended Mayberry High School and played on the football team. After high school Goober trained to be an auto mechanic in Raleigh and he served with the National Guard where he picked up the term "YO" (that means yes). He returned to Mayberry and work at Wally’s Filling Station and which he enventually buys. Goober can be described as innocent and almost childlike. He enjoys Reading comic books, playing checkers along with hunting and fishing. Goober is a man of many talents, he has won a contest for eating 57 pancakes, he also won an arm wrestling contest four years in a row and a turkey shoot in Mt. Pilot two years in a row. He takes off on Cary Grant, Edward G. Robinson and Chester from Marshal Dillon. Some of Goober’s favorites include: Corn on the cob, his favorite vegetable; favorite movie is The Monster That Ate Minnesota; his favorite toy is a Teddy Bear named Buster. Some of Goobers pets have included a skunk, a canary named Louis and a dog named Spot (the dog never had any spot). He has been deputized several times by Sheriff Taylor and his main Deputy Barney Fife. On Sundays Goober has been known to ride on his boat (which went 80, and on the water that's fast). He also enjoyed washing his car so he could take his mother for rides (he refused to put his mother in a dirty car).
